Rates: the Fine Print
When do Clients Pay?
We ask to be compensated by check at the conclusion of each session for that session and any work done between
sessions. Clients always know if work will be done between sessions and the approximate time required to complete
the work. In the case where significant work is required between sessions, we will normally mail an interim bill to
clients. In unusual circumstances, we will request a retainer (but that is the exception).
What is the Cancellation Policy?
As 3-hour mediation sessions (the typical session-length) are difficult to fill on short notice, we ask for one week
notice for all cancellations. If we do not receive this notice, we request one hour of compensation at the agreed-to
rate. This is a request and not a demand and clients are free to meet this request or not.
Can Rates be Adjusted throughout the Process?
Clients set the hourly rate during our first session. They are free to revisit this rate at any time during the process.
Are Rate Offers Ever Rejected?
Although it is very unusual, we will occasionally reject a rate-offer from prospective clients. We will do so if, given
clients' assets and/or income, Larry or Marcy concludes that he/she is not being valued in the way he/she wishes to
be, or one of us believes that the clients are not sufficiently invested in the process of mediation, something often
critical to its success. We ask that clients not worry about this possibility when setting the rate, as it is very unusual
for one of us to reject an offer (less than 5% of the time). Still, if one of us believes that our unusual compensation
system will breed resentment in us, rather than connection between clients and us, we will decline the offer.
